Question about alcohol

Has everyone quit drinking while starting their IVF cycle? I'm just curious if an occasional drink would hurt your chances....

I know there are studies that suggest that any drinking (by either the male or female) during the cycle, and in the 4 (?) months preceding the cycle, results in lower success rates. I think I would abstain totally, if I were you, just to give yourself the highest chances.

OP here....I am freaking out now. The month I was on BC pills to prep for my IVF cycle I had been having an occasional drink here and there to relax and last weekend had 4 glasses of champagne during a party with friends. Does this mean I've already doomed my cycle for failure before it even began??

No, no, no, no. You will be fine. If alcohol affected the ability to conceive, teenagers (and others) would get drunk before having unprotected sex. Honestly, you'll be fine. Enjoy the alcohol while you can (ie before you get pregnant ) Good luck!

That's not what I was saying. Just that overall success rates are lower. Not that all the people who abstain get pregnant, and none of those who don't. You'll be fine. I just think that you (and dh) should probably avoid it from here on out, just to be sure you've done everything you could. And if you do need another IVF, I might start abstaining earlier.

I drank until my transfer, after that I treated my body like I was pregnant. My nurse and doctor both told me it was okay. I don't drink large amounts, a big night out might involve 2 glasses of wine (I sound really boring!).

I am now 14 weeks pregnant and everything is looking great.

I have had 2 successful IVFs and I didn't quit drinking during the process. I did limit myself to one drink with dinner. Both my docs said it was OK. After the transfer I cut out alcohol entirely until the end of the first trimester. After that I had 1/2 a drink with dinner every so often, which wasn't so often because of heartburn. Everything turned out OK.

What is your source for this??? I have never heard this, and I've done a lot of research on this topic.

Never mind. A quick google search said you are right. This is from an NIH study:

Conclusion: A woman’s alcohol intake is associated with decreased fecundability even among women with a weekly alcohol intake corresponding to five or fewer drinks. This finding needs further corroboration, but it seems reasonable to encourage women to avoid intake of alcohol when they are trying to become pregnant.

Personally, I think stress is probably one of biggest pregnancy inhibitors, especially early on. (I have rad studies on this as well, and think if all if the cases of "infertile" women who get pregnant on their own just after they adopt, or accidentally years after being told by a doc that it would never happen for them.....not a coincidence). If having a drink every now and then alleviates stress, I think the drink is the far lesser of the 2 evils. I am currently pregnant from my 1st IVF cycle and did have the occasional didn't drink during the process, but didn't drink at all after transfer. I cut caffeine the entire time, however....it was just easier for me to give that up, I guess . You may want to throw in acupuncture as well....I did...hated it, but thought I was better off not wondering if it could have helped.

I'm SURE you haven't hurt anything....good luck!

Totally agree with this post! I also think exercise is a great addition/alternative to acupuncture. Anything that helps to get rid of stress!
