The thread about backing up to woods made me think about this. I prefer having no fence in the back yard and having the yard just merge into the trees. Some of my neighbors have put up fences, which I guess makes it easier for their dogs to hang out (though an invisible/electric fence could do that too). Besides ease of letting the dog out, are there any other big benefits from having a fence? I just find them kind of ugly and boring to look at. I guess if you live in a crowded area a fence gives you privacy? |
We back to woods and I am so happy we have a fence. Do you not have young children? I like knowing that they can play in the backyard without inadvertently heading into the woods. Also, as a dog owner, a fence is a must. Dogs break through invisible fences all the time. |
I don't mind if my kids head into the woods to play. In fact I encourage it! I used to explore and play in the woods all the time when I was young too. When I let the dog out on his own I put him on a stake and tether leash. Though about getting an invisible fence but never have. |
I love my fence. Love it. I can relax and know where the kids are, I can maintain my property without worrying about where it ends, and it allows me to garden without big pests like deer being as much of a problem. Plus fewer deer = fewer ticks. Win-win-win. |
We just let the dog out to run around and play sometimes. He never goes too far off. No fence. If we got a fence I'd get one that you can see through, like one of the low black fences you see around pools. |
Love my fence, but it's a split rail (sides that neighbor houses with dog's have mesh built in) which doesn't infringe on the view. |
We used to back to woods, and I loved having a fence. It was public park area behind that, so people could and did walk through the woods all of the time. The fence helped everyone know where the woods ended and our yard began. It was reassuring, not having random people in the yard. Yet, I could still gaze out and see the woods, and the kids could open the fence gate and play in the woods as well. |
I'd love a fence! They're ridiculously expensive and the dog doesn't stray from my sight so we just aren't getting one. I'm in a culdesac with a pie shaped lot so I think it would be hard to get to the front of the house? It's 1/4 acre and doesn't feel cramped now. |
My dog is a hound and would run in a second if we didn't have a fence. My kids are 3 and 5 - do you really let your kids that young wander into the woods unattended? |
I love my fence. It separates my yard from just bleeding into the neighbors' yards (we have houses on either side of us and then some trees behind us that act as a buffer to the neighborhood with tot lot behind our house). The privacy is awesome and it keeps deer and foxes out of our garden. Plus I have a dog, so it's easy to let him out.
If I ever buy a house without a fence, I will pay to put one up. |
My three sisters and 11 best friends (and their sisters) all live on one block. We fenced in the whole block. So the kids view all the yards as theirs. We each put a different thing in each yard. One huge swingset, one pool, one basketball court, etc. It makes all our properties feel so much bigger. |
My husband HATES fencing. |
What happens when one of them sells their house that sits in the middle of all of this? Do they become an island if they don't want to join in the kumbaya? |
Don't deer just hop fences? |
Not at age 3, but definately 5 |
