In San Diego for the week - restaurants and taco stands?

Anonymous
I hear the food in San Diego is great, particularly the simple taco joints. Anyone have anything to recommend? Thanks

Actually, the food in San Diego is meh. Far better food (especially if you want tacos) in Tijuana: Mision 19 is the best high quality restaurant in either city, and El Franc has the best tacos.

Thanks, PP. Alas, I forgot my passport and I'm not renting a car. So downtown San Diego places (or places that are a reasonable distance by cab or public transport would be great.

I can only speak to the vegetarian burritos, but I was a fan of Valentine's when I lived there. Pokez was another good one.

13:00 here. If you like potatoes, try the potato burritos at Valentines.

Former San Diego area resident here--and YES, the thing we miss the most is the Mexican food!

Any of those drive through, 24 hour Mexican food places will be good---usually they have a name like "Albertos" or "Robertos"---or something else "bertos"

I also recommend going to "the Field" if you are in the gaslamp quarter and looking for an Irish pub type place.

One of the best beer cities in America, if that's your thing.

One of the best fish tacos is at this place:
Blue water seafood market and grill

I take every guest to San Diego there, it's near old town and not out of the way.

Look for any place with Carne Asada Fries--they aren't authentic Mexican, but they are uniquely San Diego cuisine and delicious. Also, San Diego has some great breweries, as someone mentioned.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, everyone.

Another big push for Aiberto's, Aliberto's, and the like. Oh so missed. You must go to
South Beach for the mahi tacos and carne asada burritos. Also the big bowl of mussels with white
wine, garlic, and butter. Don't eat fish tacos anywhere else before you have theirs.

Oh how I miss South Beach.

If you are interested in burgers, the Burger Lounge has rather upscale grass-fed burgers and other non-beef options. http://www.burgerlounge.com/

For a place featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, go to Hodad's in Ocean Beach (also in downtown SD, but the original location is pretty epic.) Be sure to save room for a shake or malt. http://hodadies.com/
