My husband was just denied life insurance due to planned travel to high-risk countries. He makes regular trips (usually 3 weeks to 1 month in length, if that makes any difference) to places with State Department warnings--the travel is work-related and will be ongoing. He does have life insurance equal to 1.5 times his salary through his employer and we've purchased the maximum supplemental insurance possible. However, we also want to buy a policy that is not tied to his employment.
Anyone out there in a similar boat who can recommend an insurer who will cover people who travel to high-risk places? Many thanks. |
I usually buy travel insurance when I travel-it's primarily for medical coverage but you can add additional coverage for life insurance. If he makes several trips per year, it may be worth buying the policy that covers you on an annual basis so he doesn't have to buy the insurance for each trip. I buy mine through AAA. OP again. Thanks for your reply. Sorry, I should have mentioned that he does purchase travel insurance to cover his trips. Our problem is that he doesn't have life insurance the rest of the time (when he's in the US)!
I was hoping our insurer would issue a policy with exclusions if anything happened to him in certain places. No. So, any insurance companies that will issue a policy to someone with such travel? Or, even better, any companies that don't ask about travel plans? |
Do you by any chance have membership with USAA? That would be a good place to start. Believe it or not, I also heard that credit unions also have good life insurance coverage. |
Hi, 9:20. OP here. We are USAA members (and love them)...but that's who turned us down due to travel!
I appreciate the credit union suggestion and will look into this. |
Try Met Life. www.metlife.com
Regarding the travel to high risk countries, I wouldn't bring it up unless their paperwork asks about it specifically. I'm not surprised that USAA asked about this due to the customers they serve. Perhaps traveling to high risk countries wouldn't be an issue for insurance companies that insure non active duty type personnel. I've heard that term life insurance is a whole lot cheaper than the regular type. |
Does he travel for work? Why doesn't the employer offer group life insurance, and/or provide access to life ins. for their employees who are traveling on company business to high risk countries?
My DH is with the federal government and of all the places he's traveled this year, none of them are anyplace he'd like to brag about the entry stamps on his passport, LOL! As in hot, sandy, and dangerous... He didn't have a problem finding coverage with either the govt or USAA (not sure which but he disclosed both his dangerous travel and his skydiving hobby). Good luck - I'd think the employer owes the employees access to life insurance in this case.. |
