What's stylish and affordable as floor coverings?

We have hardwood floors throughout our home, and in our two primary gathering spaces we have large oriental rugs. If I had the means to replace them, what would I replace them with? Our walls are due to be repainted as well, so I may be contemplating a general refresh but on a budget. We aren't buying all new furniture, for example.
