I don't see any sock puppeting. I am afraid that we are now living in a world where white Christians are feeling oppressed. Someone once said that they cling to their guns and religion and that was considered an insult. Those who criticized that expression immediately began condemning political correctness. Go figure. Let's be thankful if all they want to cling to now is wishing us a merry Christmas.

I am black, Christian, and very liberal. I posted Merry Christmas also as I happen to like the expression. I also like Happy Kwanza, Shanah Tova, and Happy Holidays.

And quoting a Christmas card my sister gave me last year....'Merry Christmas. It's my jam, baby!'

08:48 here. Not all Christians are clinging to their guns or spouting off how they won't issue same sex marriage licenses even though they've been married 3-4 times.

That said, Jeff, I wanted to share one of my absolutely favorite ministers. I heard her on NPR and fell in love with her ideology. Wish she was in this neck of the woods.

This should probably be in the Religion forum but wanted to just share. I know a whole bunch of black Christians who love this chick....and some that don't. She is NOT for the faint of heart.

Ha! Her picture is hilarious. She sounds like she would be interesting. I hadn't heard of her before.

I was in my car and heard her on NPR. I couldn't stop listening and was late for my meeting. Any minister that starts off by saying I preach a gospel of love to junkies, drag queens, and outsiders got my attention. Either she was some crazy, burnt out hippie or she has a message worth listening to and, after all, she was on NPR. The woman is 6'1" with a whole lot of tatts and a super powerful message.

I have no more comment but this is what impressed me about Nadia:

On giving the sermon at the funeral of a teenage boy who had committed suicide

When I heard about this kid, and I heard about all of these wonderful things about him, and how queer he was, and how he played piano, all this stuff about him — he struggled with just a tiny bit of heroin and mental health problems. When I heard about him, I thought, "That is exactly the kind of guy Jesus would hang out with." We see the cast of characters Jesus surrounded himself with, people for whom life was hard, and who had some colorful things going on, and rank fishermen, and prostitutes, and tax collectors, and these are the kind of people Jesus chose to surround himself with, and I think that's important. I have no idea how Christianity went from that to what it is now.

Me one more time.....for the record, I'm well-educated, straight, upper-middle class, and all the other descriptors that wouldn't put me remotely close to "junkies, drag queens and outsiders (well, I'm more in the outsider group). But I think I know what Christ meant for us to do, and Nadia nailed it!!!

I think you missed the meaning behind the message that everyone can give greetings whether or not they're a part of a particular group. It's the thought, respectfully, that counts. I doubt a specific, exactly on the mark calendar date was what was in mind.
