Doggy Daycare?

We are moving to DC at the end of this year, and I'm shocked by how few dog daycares I'm seeing in DC. Am I missing something? There doesn't appear to be anything walking distance from most of Capitol Hill, or Mount Pleasant, or Woodley or Cleveland Parks. What dog daycares are people using? I have a 2 year old Portie and a 13 month old baby and the dog reallllly needs to get out of the house most days. Please help! Thanks.

I don't know why you'd be shocked. It's not something that most dog owners use. Everyone on Capitol Hill uses Dog-Ma. It's on 9th Street SE between Navy Yard and the highway. Also, people who work on the Hill but live elsewhere will bring their dogs there when long hours are expected at work.

The other neighborhoods you've mentioned really aren't conducive to doggy day care. They're not very commercial and rents are probably too high for this kind of business to survive.

It is not something people typically use.

Most people walk dogs themselves, take them to a dog park (for many if not most dogs this is a bad idea, as is doggy daycare but whatever), or hire a dog walker.

I live in Mt. Pleasant and have two dogs. I think more people use dog walkers and take their dogs to the dog park in Adams Morgan or the one on 11th Street in Columbia Heights. There are dog daycares around. Planet Pet moved to 14th Street and City Dogs is on 18th Street. As far as Cleveland Park or Woodley Park, there just isn't commercial space large enough for a doggy daycare.

Okay, thank you. We are moving from Manhattan and it seems like there is one every few blocks here. We are spoiled.

It's been a few years since we used them (moved to the burbs), but we used City Dogs for several years and were very happy.

At $50 per day for our two dogs daycare is simply not in our budget. And my dogs are content to sleep all day. Between our work schedules they are never alone for more than 6 hours. The only people I know who use doggie daycare are my doctor colleagues who work very long hours but also make very high salaries.

City Dogs on 18th is definitely in walking distance to Woodley (especially if you are working on the red line, can just hop on at Dupont instead of Woodley). That said, most people in my neighborhood just hire a dog walker since they are so much cheaper.

If you are living in Woodley We use Carla Ferris' dog walking service and they are great. The dog day cares in DC are also TERRIBLE... like dogs just are in a room together. We use happy paws in arlington for grooming and are happiest with them versus some of the more convenient ones in dc. we use friendship hospital and the benson one in bethesda for vets are are happy with both.

You will find residents here are extremely cheap when it comes to pets. The cheaper the better in most cases. They clip dogs themselves to save money on grooming, doggy daycare is beyond most peoples reach here.

So yeah it was weird for me to!

+1 on Carla Ferris' walking service, called Wagamuffin. We have been using it for about a year and a half and have been pleased with the ease of scheduling, thoughtful notes, and attention our pup has gotten. We do day care once in a while (like if we have to work late) but the pup always comes home kind of stinky. People love K-9 Divine, which is a ranch out in Maryland where dogs can run free all day. They do both daycare and boarding and offer pick-up and drop-off to some areas of the city.
