Looking to buy a family computer for my elementary school age kids to do homework and to organize photos. What should I be looking for ? Mac vs PC ? Laptop vs desktop ? Memory ?

What's your price range?

I wanted to stay cheap, so I got a Hewlett Packard TouchSmart 15. It's a laptop with a touch screen for my son's homework, which is easier with touch screen like an ipad, but surprise, the homework page doesn't work on an ipad. It has an intel processor, which makes it fast enough to play Minecraft. We don't do much else with it, other than Word and Excel documents. It was $400 on sale. But about $500 regularly.

Depends. If you don't want the kids to be able to move around with the computer, then desktop. We got one, and placed it in the LR so we can see what DC is doing at all times. Desktops are super cheap now. We got one for less than $300. DC wanted to play minecraft on it, too, and the graphics on the desktop is better than a laptop, unless the laptop is super expensive.

Computers become outdated in a matter of a few years. I know that in a couple of years, when DC hits MS, DC will want a laptop. So, we opted for something cheaper for now.

also check your local school requirements - we were strongly encouraged to buy a chrome book for our DS in middle school.

We have a kids computer that has all the nanny software on it and block, in the living room. the adults have a laptop.

you don't need to spring for the 64, just go with a Vic-20, I mean really are you every gonna need more than 16k?

All joking aside we got a nice budget Toshiba laptop for DD last year as one of Amazon's black Friday/cyber Monday deals. I think it was about $200 off. You might want to look and see what they're offering this year.
