End of Year Gifts for Teachers

What do folks generally do? Gift Certificates? Money? Nothing?

I'd give the teacher a gift certificate and an amazing letter of gratitude. Nothing is worth more than such a letter.

Teacher lurking.
If you feel like your child has grown, had a good year, etc., a note that says so does mean a great deal to us. Thanks.

thoughtful note/letter for me. in this economy, after the crushing tuition, annual fund, auction, and all the miscellaneous add-ons, i'm tapped out by the end of the year. hope the teachers will understand.

Another teacher here. A nice, personalized note would mean so much! That would top my list of desired end-of-year gifts.

Is there a legal limit for how much we can spend on a teacher? She did a few favors for us and we would like to get her something extra special.

I'd be surprised if there were a legal limit at private schools, but your school may have a policy. Check the handbook.

Personally, I think that even in this situation the best gift would be an appreciative letter and perhaps some simple flowers. I understand that you are motivated by gratitude, but doing more could be construed as an ex post payoff.

Growing up and attending public schools, my family always gave teachers some sort of gift. Not always fancy, but something: a good cookbook, book of personal interest to them, giant tins of home-baked items, etc. Now, I try to give my children's teachers something directly of interest or use to them, or in some cases, something fun like a pie plate with a pie in it, or movie passes.

My DDs private school does not allow teacher gifts at holidays or year end. It includes some pretty wealthy parents so I think they are trying to level the playing field. I love it.

This doesn't sound very good for the teachers!

Perhaps the teachers feel they have a full supply of coffee mugs and other mementos already. Actually the school allows parents to donate to a general pool, or contribute extra tickets, to be distributed to the teachers and staff overall. There are lots of way to express appreciation that don't involve gifts.
