Hi. Does anybody know a place to volunteer with my 12 yo DD? We are looking to serve meals, or pack meals, or do most anything other than build things. Trying to help others and show her how fortunate she is at the same time. We are looking for something in Northern Va. but would be willing to go further if needed. Thanks for your help in advance!
Where do you live? With my kids in MC we've sorted food at MANNA, sorted donations and helped customers shop at A Wider Circle. The National Center for Families will also allow kids to volunteer, not sure if the minimum age is 12 or 13

I don't know where you are but I just signed up to volunteer for this organization that is featured in the Washington Post today:
Comfort Cases: http://www.comfortcases.org/ We are going to join one of their packing sessions on Nov 21st in Rockville. If you submit under the "get involved" option, they will send you the particulars. |

Arlington Food Assistance Center has lots of opportunities to volunteer -- here's the link specifically for teenage volunteers. I think 12 year old falls in this category, as long as you go with her:

We did DC Central Kitchen with our 13 year old and it was very meaningful
OP here. Thank you all for your replies. It is amazing to think how volunteering, no matter how, could change lives!
A wider Circle has a great program and is always happy to have kids come with their parents.
I just started at Alive House in Alexandria with my 12 yo son. It was awesome! They have a monthly food program where first you bag the food and then help bring it to the car of families. It can be some hard labor, but so worth it.
