DD is in a private middle school right now and is sick of wearing a uniform. She seems to think that all private schools have uniforms in high school as well, but I don't think that's the case. I'm looking for a list of (preferably co-ed) schools where the upper school doesn't have a uniform.
And no, this is not a criteria for applying to a school - we still have several years before that anyway. I just want to let her know that it IS a possibility down the road! |
| Waldorf |
| Sandy Spring Friends School. I don't think St. Andrew's does either, but that's based mostly on the pictures on the website. |
| GDS |
OP here - these were the 2 that I looked at before posting, and I thought the same based on website pictures. |
| CESJDS.org does not have a uniform. |
| Sidwell |
Many upper schools have a dress code, not a uniform. First step into moving into the real world and learning to dress neatly in regular clothes
Potomac, Maret, Sidwell, SSSAS, Flint Hill, GDS |
| I think St Andrews only requires a uniform in the lower grades, but drops it for HS, if not before. Check their website to be sure. If you want HS in MoCo, forget Sidwell, GDS, Maret. Bullis and Holton require uniforms, IDK about the Catholic schools, but I would guess most or all require a uniform. |
No uniform required at Gonzaga in DC. Just a strict dress code. |

There is no uniform in St. Andrew's high school and at least when my kids went there none in middle school either (but I have not kept up with that), but there is a dress code. I only have boys so can't really speak to the girls dress code, but I think it is basically aimed at avoiding jeans and anything super short/or highly revealing. They don't let you wear shorts in the middle of winter (except for sports, of course). The only times I have ever heard real complaints are at the beginning of the school year when new families aren't sure how about where the lines get drawn or when a girl wants to wear very short skirts/dresses or very revealing tops that are the latest style. Occasionally, they have "dress up" days but those are few and far between. For the vast majority of kids there, it just isn't a big deal.

OP here, and that's interesting about Gonzaga - I work right by there and frequently see Gonzaga boys on the metro, and I had assumed that they were wearing a uniform since they all seem to be dressed alike! And I'm actually surprised to hear that Bullis has a uniform. |
| the OP specified MOCO so most of the schools here (except St Andrews and SSFS) don't make the cut. |
