Refer or not? Pls advise.

NNAT is 118. He is a bright kid but not exceptional, strong in math and average in language arts. Should we refer for level 3 services? What do you think are our chances of being accepted?

Thanks in advance!

It's very likely he'll be offered Level III services. My kids both got them and were probably around the same. I don't think you have to ask for them, teacher and the AART will pretty much just come to you. This isn't going to a center, after all. It's a pull-out that at most will likely happen once a week -- except during the time when the AART and others are buried under the avalanche of parent referrals and appeals to get their kids into AAP. Every other kind of service in FCPS is secondary to that.

I don't know how it is done at your child's school -- I won't assume it's the same, but I don't think there is any referral for level 3 services... it's a referal for level 4 or whatever the aart wants to do.

I'm surprised you say your child is strong in math but not in LA. The NNAT score, IME, relates more to math ability than LA. So, with a 118 NNAT, you might expect that the CogAT would be lower if LA is actually not a strong suit.

FWIW, my DD had a 118 on NNAT and a higher cogAT b/c of LA being superior... but still, the composite was just a point off the automatic cut off. We did not refer. Math has always been a bit of a struggle, although she has been in adv. math for the past 3+ yrs. It has not been easy for her. That's what I think of when I see a 118 NNAT.... math is not super strong, but with effort, can hang in there.

I contrast that with my other child whose NNAT was 149. Math IS his strong suit and LA is not his greatest. His verbal was more in the 92-94% (I can't remember exactly).... and it shows. The 149 reflects his logical nature. The 92-94% in LA is reflected in his resistance to writing (he is in AAP).

You will need to wait and see what the CogAT scores are == there may be a significant difference. But, if 118 is the highest score, I'd be hesitant to put the pressure of AAP on him.

I wish the criteria for level III were as clear as for level IV. I know it's a waste to even contemplate level IV without at LEAST a 130-132 on something and a 12 GBRS score. I wish I know that same type of information for level III.

I meant -- either it's a referral for level 4 OR if not referring for level 4, then it's just a matter of the AART choosing the kid for level 3. I'm not aware of any "referral" for level 3 services -- at least at my kids' base school.

I was told if your child is not in pool for level IV, and you think they need level III, you should refer for level III. Pool kids who don't get level IV are automatically screened but non-pool kids can be parent referred to level III.

Here's the referral form for Level III - http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/packet/Fillable_AAPSchool-BasedServicesReferralForm.pdf

I don't know what the timeline is, though. i.e., Whether it's as hard and fast as the Level IV timeline. Check with your AART.

Every school is different. At our school, Level III referrals are done in October/November.

The NNAT is more related to the nonverbal part of the CogAT than the quantitative part. Op, you should know whether your child is strong in math or not. My DC has always gotten 4s and now As in math, and did not do that great on the NNAT. DC is in level IV AAP and math is DC's strongest subject despite NNAT scores. Don't let someone who has no personal experience with your chilf tell you whether your child is strong in math.

My DC's NNAT score was 119. I thought it was not high enough but the teacher recommended AAP for next year. So we're going to submit. If they get in good. If they don't, that's fine too.
