can you replace picture matte and re-use frame?

The title says it all --- on an older picture (1970s), can a framer replace the matte, but re-use the frame? Will it end up costing the same amount as getting it reframed?

Why can't you just take off the back and put a new mat in? They sell mats everywhere- Michaels or any craft store.

I would only pay a professional if it's an extremely weird sized frame or piece of expensive artwork.

It's easy enough to reuse a frame. You can ask a framer to just cut a new mat for you. That should save some money.

When I buy a frame, can I put my own picture in or do I pretend the models in the stock photos are my family?

I don't think it's a stock size and I'm not sure if the material (oil on board) requires a special matte. The current matte is a 70s era burlap-type material with s wooden rail inner frame, not a stock matte or frame.
