Home Security

Anonymous

We are new homeowners in NW DC and would love to install a home security system before we move in.
Please recommend your home alarm company if you are happy with them. Any must-have or essential features?
Thank you!

I am very happy with AT&T Digital Life.

I can access my cameras via my phone. I can program sensors (doors, windows, glass breakage, motion, smoke, water leak, cameras, locks) anyway I want and have system text me whenever there is an event/motion detection. I can program cameras to record to various lengths of my choice. Camera can be tilted/panned on command and presets.

We've had Simplisafe for about a month now and really like it so far. We got refurbished components, supplemented by a few new ones, to save money (about $550 for 4 entry sensors, 4 motion detectors, 4 glassbreak sensors, a panic button, and a smoke detector, plus accessories like decals, yard signs, and 2 keychain remotes that let you disarm/arm the system -- they also have water and freeze sensors if you want those.)Installation was a breeze and only took an hour, if that -- I really liked that we could install it ourselves as opposed to have to wait around for an installation person. The system is cellular based (so no need to have a phone line). For $25/month we get monitoring which includes the ability to log into their website to see the status of the system, configure the system, etc. We also get calls/texts/emails whenever there is an alarm -- we can also configure it so that you get texts/emails whenever there is activity (i.e. arm/disarm) but I didn't want that much traffic.

The downsides to it are that they do not yet have the ability to integrate cameras (although they say that is coming) and that it doesn't integrate with home automation technology (but we weren't looking to do that anyway).
