Cheap roofing contractors

We bought that needs a new roof. We are planning to put a second floor on the house in the next 5 years, so I do not want to spend a ton of money, nor do I need top of the line.
I have talked to a couple companies, but none can get over the fact that I don't want 30 year architectural shingles, hardiplank put in along peak, etc. I just want a simple asphalt roof that will last until we remodel.

So does anyone here have a recommendation?

What you're asking for makes no sense, this would be like asking "can anyone recommend an unreliable and dangerous car?"

I certainly understand that you don't want a long lasting roof but if you simply conveyed your need for a basic entry-level shingle roof your contractors would probably be more than happy to comply. You will however run into a problem because no professional roofing contractor would cut corners to simply save you money; their fear would be that you would cancel your addition and begin calling them back after the roof failed to perform.

My advice would be to wait on replacing the roof until you have a clear plan for your addition.

I guess my question is, has anyone done a very basic asphalt roof with no upgrades and if so, who did you use. The word I should have used was basic - all of the companies were pushing me for upgrades even after I explained what I need.

You should go to Home Depot and get an estimate. You can pick your own roofing shingles from the store, and then have the subcontractor install.
