I think creating a fake identity and ethnicity and building a life around it qualifies as more than just a character flaw.

Sofia doesn't have a fake accent although she emphasizes it on the show.

She has talked about this. When she came to America, she thought she had to get rid of her accent to be successful - she was looking at Selma Hayek and Penelope Cruz as examples so she spent a lot of money and many many hours with a coach trying to train her accent away. However it never came naturally to her and she said her focus when she was trying to act was always on her tongue and her mouth and trying to get the words right and accent right and it made her a worse actress as she wasn't focused on her acting. Eventually she decided to forget trying to talk with an American accent and instead use her own accent but make it her 'thing'.

Lots of kids doesn’t mean you screw like rabbits - ask all the infertile couples of the world. If you have five kids with an elderly man, it means you use fertility products. Sex has nothing to do with it.

Um, not necessarily.

I’m so disappointed but not shocked because I worked in Hollywood for years - these kind of arrangements are a common thing among those very unhinged from reality. But she was the first “celeb” that I actually followed and interacted with on SM and admired and I was so confused why because I’ve always been more cynical than that.

You can in fact find video of her mother giving speeches on medical topics without any accent at all (born in Midwest educated in Boston where she practiced for 30 years - so how did her daughter also grow up in Spain if not boarding school in Mallorca?). Her father is also American born and also practiced in Boston for 30 years.. Her grandfather just passed away ( https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.legacy.com/obituaries/bennington/obituary.aspx%3fn=david-l-thomas&pid=195863246 ) it looks like last month and he was from Iowa. If you look at her parents website for their business in Spain Dr Kathrine Hayward writes about having to let go of her children’s decisions (?) https://internationalintegrators.org/20-20-vision/. There’s a picture of the same people on her parents website on Lee’s photos of their wedding so it is the same parents not just a coincidence of same names.

Can’t believe I actually spent time on this - but coronavirus has led to some internet black holes lol. Very sad. I would probably be very devastated if I grew up and wondered why my mom gave us all Spanish names and spoke with an off and on again accent and made me believe this was part of my identity and then as soon as I can piece things together realize it’s either a lie or a VERY intricate branding strategy that I was born into believing. Bummer.

Oh looks like everyone already addressed all of this. Super sleuths. Anyway I think she’s probably a good person and she seems like a good mom
Who knows but it’s all kind of sad

As a kid you would feel very sad and disillusioned I think. I also think her parents and what they must think. Do they even have a relationship? Like no you weren’t raised like you say and now all our grandkids have Spanish nmes. Alec is too old to think critically I think. He just can’t fathom someone would go this far.

Thank, PP. So the interest in Mallorca, Spain and learning Spanish come from her father’s side, not her mom. Still an interesting story without needing to develop and fake a Spanish identify.

The previous poster nailed it on the head. Her blonde haired blue eyed kids are going to grow up with names like "Leon Soto" and "Carmen Gabriela" when they have 0% Spanish in their blood. It is really WEIRD. I sort of understand the pretending to be Spanish thing, for the media, for her "brand," and pretending to be something you aren't, but to do this to your poor kids? They are going to grow up thinking they are Spanish. Absolutely bizarre.

Very upsetting for infertile women, women with no help, women who are poor, women who don't have kids, women who are not beautiful, women who are not flexible, women who are fat...just very triggering on so many levels...
