Looking for a nice, scenic (and safe) route to take my feet to next weekend, for my long run. Any suggestions for some nice fall running?
Just needs to be completely accessible by metro. And on pavement/road (no trails right now, at least not for long segments). Thank you! |
| why the metro accessible requirement? |
| Potomac Park, of course! |
When you say no trails, can you do a paved trail? The Capital Crescent Trail is paved from the Bethesda metro to Georgetown, and might make a nice run. Georgetown isn't metro accessible, but you could run a few miles and then turn around and run back the other way. |

Take Metro to East Falls Church. The W & OD trail is right there. Get on it going towards DC, but then take a right and get onto Four Mile Run trail. That's hilly and goes through the trees.
The only big minus about this: Lots of people are on the trail at all hours and you'll need to watch for cyclists zooming by. |

Capital Crescent Trail is great You can get it in Bethesda very close to the Bethesda metro. It's a wide paved trail that runs to Georgetown. I'd recommend 4-5 miles as an out and back (total 8-10 miles). Turning around after 2.5 miles for a 5-mile run isn't so "fun" for me on the CCT.

| If you don't mind doing the first and last ~2 miles on a trail, you could take the metro to Woodley Park and run the Rock Creek Park trail to Beach Drive, which is closed to traffic on the weekend north after Piney Branch Parkway. It's open to cars at some points but has a ton of people running on the road in those segments. Once you're on Beach Drive, you can do about 5 miles out before hitting the Maryland border. It goes through Rock Creek Park and is pretty. |
| From the Dupont Metro, run up Mass Ave til you hit Wisconsin. turn left onto Wisconsin and go straight down until you hit P St. Turn left and back to metro. 5 MI. I'd you want to make it 10, go across key bridge run that trail to memorial bridge, run rock Creek trail to P St and that will take you back to the metro. 10 MI option is on trails though. |
| 17:25 here - both the "trails" I refer to are asphalt. |
| I second CCT - take metro to Bethesda. Or mt Vernon trail is beautiful in fall too. Closest access via Megan would be Crystal City. I personally would not do Four Mike Run as another PP suggested.... As a woman, I don't feel very safe on that trail but that's my personal take. I'm sure plenty of people feel differently but since you listed safety as a priority. Big swathes of W&O look pretty junky. On that one, I don't think I necessarily feel unsafe - just kinda ugly. |
God - autocorrect. Megan = metro. Mike = mile. |
| Crystal city, get on gw parkway trail, you could run either north/west or south and its great |
| From Rosslyn metro, you could run on the Custis trail West, the Mt Vernon trail south or cross the key bridge to the C&O canal towpath or the rock creek trail North. |
