Is he a junior or senior? What is his likely major? Geographic limitations? Urban, rural? Is he interested in football & frats or is he a quirky or nerdy type? We need more info.

Senior. He had been focused on big schools but visited his cousin at Williams and loved it. Suddenly he is scrambling to look at SLACs.

Likely a history or philosophy major. He likes cold weather. Dislikes football and frat culture. A bit geeky, loves politics. Ok with rural or urban but not a big city person.

Thanks!

OP here. Do they give merit aid? We cannot pay what the FAFSA says we can.

DC is white.

If he is liberterian or 'conservative' in his view, Claremont McKenna would be an excellent fit. Has a great pipeline into good jobs on the hill and in government back in DC.

Swarthmore & Haverford (no football, geeky, suburban, good history/phil departments).

NESCAC schools are going to be all more 'bro' than the three I just mentioned.

If you are in a situation where you need merit aid, you may want to encourage your son to pursue a more employable degree.

What is your HHI, what does the fafsa think you can pay, what athletic teams?

HHI $230, FAFSA says we can pay $59k, prefer not to say sport as it could out him.

We have saved aggressively, can pay up to about $45K.We are unwilling to incur debt or have DC take on loans, and are older parents so retirement isn't far away. DS has one younger sibling, a sophomore.

Carleton does not offer merit aid. If he likes colder weather consider Luther, St Olaf and Grinnell. Friends of ours son got a nice merit package at St Marys on the Eastern Shore. There's a zillion schools, college confidential will filter to show schools where more merit aid is likely.

Thank you, this is helpful. We will look into those.

Denison gives good merit aid. There is an active Greek life program, but that's not the only social outlet. And central Ohio has cold, snowy winters.
