Need to replace track lighting in kitchen - no island. Can lighting?

Hello all, does anyone have suggestions for attractive alternatives to track lighting? We have a track light in our kitchen, and it's just dreadful (ugly and uneven light). The hitch is that we don't have an island - most images I see on Houzz or Pinterest have their primary lighting over top of the island.

Can lighting seems the most likely contender, but what does it cost to install?
