Minecraft Videos for Absolute Beginners

Anonymous
DD is 7, and she and I are trying to get started with Minecraft.

We read the "Essential Guide" book, downloaded the program to our PC, picked a user name, and got ourselves started in creative mode.

From there, we had trouble doing much other than walking and flying.

We get that you can choose items from inventory and build things with them etc. But for example, after selecting a torch and holding it in our hand, we couldn't figure out how to make light for ourselves so we could see at night.

So . . . we were hoping to watch a few YouTube videos to show us the BASICS of getting started in creative mode. Any recommendations?

(We tried Google but kept finding things that either already assumed some knowledge of basics, included some inappropriate language, or were hard to understand because of foreign accents or bad acoustics.)

Start with the instructions at the bottom of this page:

There are lots of videos out there, but they do all seem to assume familiarity with the basics.

But the basics are pretty easy, OP, once you can walk and fly. You really can only build or break. The torch in your hand only lights when you place it, either in the ground or on the wall of a building. I would practice using different kinds of blocks and wood to build with, then experiment with water, lava, tracks and minecarts.

Stampy Longnose has fun videos, as does Dan from TheDiamondMinecart. Have fun!

Invite a slightly older kid over for a tutorial! My 9 yo would have you up and running in 30 minutes.

Yep. My kids ( 5yo DS and 7yo DD) learned from a neighbor and they are so far beyond what I could ever do in that game... it's crazy.

Yes. My son has taken several afterschool "classes" and they all seem to turn out being the kids teaching each other, while the "teacher" just monitors them.

I was going to say that my 8 year old would gladly act as a tutor. You can pay him in chocolate milk.

Please don't buy anything to "teach" you how to play minecraft....everything you could ever need is a quick search and click away on youtube.

Just search for "beginners guide minecraft" on google....you will get several hits that do not require any basic knowledge of the game.
