Behavior at co-ed schools (lower school)

Anonymous
DD is at a coed private -- she is in the Lower School. Seems like the classroom time is consistently interrupted by poorly behaved boys. Is this a consistent problem at co-eds? My nephew goes to all boy lower school and the expectations for their behavior seems higher.

Maybe you should post this in the Schools General section not private schools.

In public, yes, consistently it is the boys (my boy being one of them) that "disrupt" classtime in the lower grades because they have trouble sitting still, and the current classroom environment requires sitting still without interruption for longer than they are developmentally ready for. When you look at the single-sex boys classrooms you should also compare instruction and not just disruption. Does the instruction use movement, is there lots of outdoor time, etc. It may be easier to hold the boys to this "higher standard" when you create outlets for them to be able to meet this higher standard. At least in public school, many classrooms in the lower grades set higher-energy boys up for failure where this is concerned.
