| Been trying to conceive for 1.5 years. No problem getting pregnant, but things go wrong early. I've had 4 miscarriages. At this point, I'm really tired of the poking and prodding but I'm scheduled for a Sonohysterogram (SHG). For some reason, I'm feeling very fearful of the procedure. After 3 D&Cs with no anesthesia, I'm fearing something similar. Is it that bad? or less so? Thanks for your procedure descriptions... |

Is that the one where they inject the fluid and look at your tubes with an crazy? Mine was fine but really sucked for about 15 seconds. But I've heard once you've been pregnant it doesn't hurt as much.
I've never heard of a D&C being done with no anesthesia. I'm so sorry. I can't believe a doctor would do that. |
| Autocorrect. Crazy =X-Ray |
| OP here. I think that's what I'm having done. They mentioned filling my uterus with fluid and looking at it. Something about a catheter, which freaks me out. I had catheters when I was very young and I remember them really, really, really hurting. To be honest, the D&Cs were about 15 seconds of awfulness, followed by god-awful cramping and a boatload of tears. I'm really hoping that's not what I can expect.... |

Do you mean HSG? I was terrified of it, but it was literally 1 second of pain. Definitely NOT comparable to a D&C without anesthesia. That sounds like torture!
The catheter goes through your cervix, which is MUCH wider than your urethra. You can't even feel that. I think the painful part is when it flushes into the tubes. Again, the pain was very brief and there was a little leakage of fluid afterwards, and no pain or recovery. |

The HSG is totally fine. A little pain and discomfort like bad cramps afterwards and the giant machine is cold but it's totally fine. I didn't have a D&C without anesthesia but I can't imagine this is even close to that.
Yes the catheter is inserted into the cervix and while not pleasant itS doable. I think I took a couple aspirin before the procedure. |
| I've had both - a D&C without anesthesia (but other strong pain needs so it didn't really hurt) and the sonohysterogram (with saline not dye though). There was mild discomfort but it wasn't that bad really. I don't imagine it even comes close to an unmedicated d&c. Just remember to take some extra strength Advil 30 minutes prior to the procedure. |
| Pp here. By the way I'm so sorry about your miscarriages. I also had 4 prior to my daughter and then another 3 prior to my current pregnancy. I don't want to impose and hijack your thread but if you have any questions about my treatments/testing let me know. |

Sonogysterogram is to evaluate the endometrial cavity. A hysterosalpinogram is to evaluate tubal patency.
A sonohysterogram may cause a little period like cramping and pelvic pressure. A good amount of saline is infused through a catheter inserted into the endocervical canal to distend the endometrial cavity. Take ibuprofen 30-60 minutes prior to the procedure. You will do fine. |
| I thought the one with the water and ultrasound was better than the one with xray contast and xray machine. The difference is the first only asseses your uterine cavity. The later can also but not as well and also checks to see if your tubes are open. I had no pain at all with the first while the second was pain for maybe only 10 seconds while the dye went through my tubes. I was fine by the time they sat me up. |
| I'm a PP. If its the one with the ultrasound (not x-ray) I didn't even feel it. |
This. I've had both an HSG and an SHG (what you are doing OP). The SHG was very easy. I had a little cramping later in the day and not much else. I did take some advil before and after. Really not a big deal at all. Much much easier than a D&C. I also got pregnant the month I had it done after 2 years of unexplained infertility. My DD is over a year old now. |
