veggie hair dyes

has anyone found a salon that uses the infamous vegetable hair dye?

No, but regular hair dyes now are very safe even if you're pregnant. Most doctors no longer have rules about not dying your hair.

No. I use semi-perm hair dye (no ammonia)--Clairol Natural Instincts and used it throughout 1st preg with no problems. Aveda's hair colors also look good and went to a salon in Middleburg that used them. Henna is safe.

I use Naturtint (permanent hair color with vegetable ingredients, no ammonia and no parabens), I buy it at Whole Foods.

I read this on Baby Center - it was written by a nurse midwife. So not sure if "veggie hair dyes" are really any better than regular hair dyes:

You may have heard that vegetable dyes are a good alternative if you want to avoid using synthetic chemical agents during pregnancy. But buyer beware: I looked at all of the so-called natural and herbal preparations at my local health food store. In addition to the various "natural" substances listed as ingredients, all of the dyes I saw had one or more of the very same synthetic chemical compounds (such as p-phenylenediamine, dihydroxybenzene, and aminophenol) that the major cosmetic companies put in their permanent and semipermanent dyes.

Personally, I think it's always better to use hair dye with no ammonia and vegetable dyes usually have no ammonia and nowadays some regular dyes have no ammonia either. The smell of ammonia is terrible, especially when you are pregnant and your sense of smell is heightened.
