My tween told me today that it's pretty well known that drug dealers hang out in the Lee-Harrison shopping center, specifically downstairs near the martial arts place and in the Harris Teeter garage and sell to Williamsburg and Yorktown kids after school on Fridays.
Anyone ever heard this? I'm wondering about tipping the police, or if this is just one of those crazy kid rumors. Concerned b/c of the tone of the PTA message that went out re: Yorktown Homecoming and heroin. |
| Well, there's a police car in the teeter garage right now. |
| I am regularly in both places on Friday afternoons, and have never noticed people loitering around there. |
What was the PTA message? |
Me too. That place is crawling with nosy moms. No way would this fly. |
| I think this is likely untrue. Kids get in a little trouble for loitering or being noisy, and word spreads that there was trouble, then people assume drugs. It's possible. I'm not naive, but seems unlikely. |
| I believe it. There are tons of kids hanging out there without any supervision. |

Our children are very rich. They have a lot of cash in their pockets and a whole lot of freedom. We generally believe they couldn't possibly do anything wrong because they are rich and white. That gives them cover.
Do you really think there isn't a fair amount of drug use? From what I've heard, the further north you go, the harder the drugs get... and this would be consisted with my own upbringing in the 80s. |
You really think they'd be that obvious? If so, I guess we're all safe. Wrap. Next story... |
Where exactly do you think they're going to hang out near the martial arts studio without anyone noticing them? There are classes going on all afternoon after school gets out, there are lots of parents walking through the halls, and waiting outside while their kids take classes. Constantly people going up and down the stairs, and in and out of the bathrooms. As for the parking garage, it's entirely possible they're hanging out in cars waiting for customers and I haven't noticed them for that reason. But if that's what's going on, it means they're not randomly soliciting your kid who's just there to buy some Yoo-hoo. Your kid would need to be actively seeking it out and know where to find them. And if your kid is sufficiently into it that he knows how to find the dealer, simply getting the dealer out of the parking garage isn't going to solve your problem. |
Does this even happen? Many drug dealers are dumb but few are this dumb. |
| Maybe behind the building? Or the stairways? There are certainly some corners where moms aren't hanging out. And maybe it's a little later in the day? After the elementary kids are back home? |
|
My brother was a pot dealer and all of his clients sought him out. Not the other way around. Basic premis of capitalism. He has possession of a scarce product.
I use post tence bc he went to jail and is now legAlly employed. |
But even still, that's not where the high school/middle school kids are hanging out after school. They're generally outside the Starbucks, and used to be in the Harris Teeter until management started cracking down on it. I'm not going to say a drug deal has never happened somewhere at that shopping center, but your kid really has to be looking for it, these people aren't approaching him/her. And if your kids is looking for it, changing the location of the deals isn't going to change the outcome. |
| Many heroin dealers deliver. And they'll come by your house at three in the morning while you and the rest of the neighborhood is asleep. |
