DD (6) has always had dark hairs on her back and legs but this morning I noticed a longer dark, fine hair in her pubic region. Should I be concerned? She isn't showing any sings of puberty (developing breasts, body odor, etc).
I don't think one random single long hair is anything to worry about. If she had a fine fuzzy patch then that might need looking into.
If it's a single hair and it's fine, i wouldn't worry about it, especially in the absence of other changes (breast buds).
I got it when I was 8 yo but didn't otherwise have early signs of puberty. I think there's a range. If it's fine hair, not coarse, then I wouldn't worry at this point.
Thanks all. Just seeing these responses now. It is one long hair plus other hair, which is similar to those on her legs and back (fine and short). Definitely more than was there before but not sure if it would be considered "pubic" hair. And she is not showing any other signs of early puberty.

I'd call the pediatrician; it could be a sign of PCOS. My neighbor's daughter was diagnosed at 6.

Discuss with her pediatrician. If needed, she'll get referred to an endocrinologist for bone tests and blood work. Just teach her to accept her body, growth, etc., the way it comes. Nothing wrong with early puberty. What does matter is nurturing confidence, physical exercise and a healthy diet - stick to organic and minimal meat.
Don't be too concerned Very fine light fuzz does not always mean early puberty children do have fine hair all over but don't make too much of a big deal infront of your daughter and just mention your concerns to your dr at some point and just keep an eye out for it becoming more longer and noticeable and also under arm hair and signs of breast buds. Luv to you both.

Normal age range for starting puberty is 8-13 but some can begin to show development from 6-7 which is considered too early but depending if she has just turned 6 or is nearly 7
if she develops slowly she would then be getting within the "normal" age range. One of the previos posters said she got it at 8yrs old, I was 10, my neice turned 9 in August and she's now getting it. |
