need to replace my oven and just realized it's a slide in. the freestanding are much less expensive. is it just an aesthestic thing to get a slide in? will a free standing fit in the same space |
Slide in often have a countertop piece along the back because they are less deep. Also the countertop usually comes closer to the sides/ goes under the top of the stove so there's no gap for a more "built in" look. |
When we had our kitchen done last year, we wanted a slide-in so badly because they look really nice. However, I couldn't get over the price (double the price of a free-standing) and there were a lot of complaints about the control panel burning out from the heat of the oven. In the end, you don't need a slide-in unless you are replacing one in a kitchen island. If it's against the wall, free-standing is just fine. If there is a counter piece behind it, you will need to have that cut out and you should measure to make sure the new range fits well in the gap. |
Big difference is looks. If you have young kids, the the freestanding as the controls are in the back and harder to reach. |
The controls in the back never really worked for me...always burning my hands. I like the clean lines of the slide in much better. Wasnt double the cost. |
also the slide ins avoid that gap between counter and range that collects food. |
It really depends on the measurements. There might be a tiny gap on either side between the side of the oven and the counter. The only downside is food falling down there, but there are ways to address this too, e.g., http://www.walmart.com/ip/38086901?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227028182701&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=46972396712&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=91975330592&veh=sem So you'll save money with a free standing, just measure very carefully. |
standup is ghetto |
There are stand Alone ones that look like slide ins now. Look at the ge cafe. |
Actually, I found that they were much more than twice the cost. Most of the slide in ranges are at least $1000 more than a freestanding range with similar features. And they are prone to breaking down because the controls get roasted by the oven. Sure, you might find one on deep discount but the negative reviews will tell you why. |
Aren't those all slide-ins? Besides, if you're looking for a price break, this is not the product line to aim for. |
? No, this is ghetto standup... ![]() |
