glass inserts for kitchen cabinets: single pane? tempered? glass alternative?

not sure what to do? just one glass front cabinet over the sink. called the hardware store and they said single pane glass is fine but reading on web that tempered might be safer and that a glass alternative is yet another possibility (won't shatter but might scratch?)

any advice?
