Georgetown Visitation vs. Stone Ridge

Anonymous
Our 8th grader, at a MoCo parish school, is preparing to apply to high schools. She's looked at Holy Child, Holy Cross, GV, and SR, and liked these two best. Can anyone comment on the differences between the two? They seem like schools with comparable academics so I'm thinking it will be more a matter of fit.

Just google the two in the forum - there are many threads, many recent which comment on the similarities and the differences. Plenty of info out there

Visitation appears to more frequently be the choice of long-established Catholic families. Many of whom have ties to the school already.

Visitation is thought of by many as the sister school of Gonzaga.

New poster. That is interesting. For some reason I always thought Prep was the brother school of Visi.

Yes, of all the girls schools they are the most comparable. Not a whole lot of difference besides location and that affects demographics a bit with Visi having more city kids. The other school do have great points too but these two are most similar in the whole package. I believe Visi is slightly larger (considering SR Upper School only) and some girls prefer the high school only atmosphere. Similar in strength of athletics overall (neither WCAC) and extracurricular offerings. Visi has an edge in perceived academics and Stone Ridge has a social justice component that many girls use to their advantage at college application time. Both good choices so go with her personal preference.

Oh, unless the price tag matters. Visi is cheaper.

The sense I get is that GV is very much connected with Gonzaga. They have frequent mixers with the two schools and also share each other's drama program. Maybe Prep is more connected to Stone Ridge?

Stone Ridge is less prestigious/ less of a "name school", if that matters to you

Yes, can confirm that GV is primarily connected to Gonzaga. A lot of families with girls at GV have boys at Gonzaga, and vice-versa.

No. It really isn't. Gonzaga and Visi are brother/sister schools.

Not super important. I have no doubt that she could get an excellent education at either so more concerned about fit, feel of the two schools, etc.

How to AHC and Holy Child compare?

We've only been in the DC area for a few years so I'm not too up to date on the various private schools. Thanks.

We went to both Open Houses this weekend. The academics seem pretty comparable.

IMO, the Stone Ridge girls were much more engaging and energetic than the Visitation girls.

We only made it to Visitation. We were very impressed.

I live in NE. Both of my daughters went to SR for MS. Older daughter stayed for HS and younger switched to Visi. I would say about equal in extracurriculars and sports. SR was more diverse, more academic and had a very strong social justice/community service program. Visi was easier for us to get to, more social and stronger religion.

AHC has more academic diversity with programs at all levels - regular, honors, AP and it also has a full IB program. They are a little bit larger and draw students for their dance and drama programs and their strong sports. Holy Child is known to have a solid program for students with learning differences which, coupled with its small size, make it a draw for those needing more support.

Stone Ridge and AHC are the most metro accessible, Visi after that and Holy Child is the least public transportation accessible.

Visi is also hard to get into because so many legacies apply.
