A "frosty" is a frozen embryo or blastocyst.

You can also have a fresh embryo or blastocyst. Usually you do an egg retrieval, the egg is fertilized and you get X amount of embryos. If everything looks good and your body is ready to go then you do a fresh embryo transfer. You put the other embryos in the freezer ( and they become frosties). Sometimes you are not able to do a fresh transfer right away because your hormones are not where they should be so all the embryos would go to the freezer.

A blastocyst is about a 5 day embryo. It's a little ball of cells... more developed than a 3 day embryo. It is called an embryo until it attaches to the uterus I believe and then it becomes a fetus. Blastocyst and embryo are not mutually exclusive

Actually, it's called an embryo until your 8th week, then it becomes a fetus.

Some of the above info was incorrect. Frosty just means frozen embryo. A blastocyst is an embryo at a more developed stage (typically about 5 days old). You can have frozen embryos that are not yet blasts.

yes it says it that. You can also have an 8 week old embryo that is not a blastocyst. read more carefully

"Frosty" is just one of those juvenile terms used on some of the other TTC/infertility websites. Like "snowflake", "sticky bean", etc. Gag. The lack of those terms is the main reason this is the only infertility forum I visit.

Seconding the above comment. I really dislike the infantilization of these medical terms.
