Broken collarbone -- experiences?

Anonymous
DS, age 9, broke his collarbone yesterday. What can we expect in terms of healing time, process? Any good tips from those who have been there?

Thanks!

I assume there's no surgery involved? Depending on the extent of the break, figure 6 weeks and a whole lot of bored kid. You have to avoid anything that could possibly shift the bone out of place, so no running, jumping, doing anything that might cause him to fall. Is he in one of those soft splints?

Good luck. It's a slog of a recovery, but beats the heck out of surgery.

My son broke his collarbone at 4. There's not a lot to be done besides stabilizing it, and encouraging your child to stay off the playground equipment and other things one might climb 'til it heals. Hopefully this is easier with a nine year old than it was with a four year old.
