If we wanted to do a very nuts and bolts sort of renovation, how much do you think it would cost? We would provably want to: change the flooring from linoleum to tile, change the countertop to something nice (marble or equivalent), paint the cabinets, and add a free-standing island. We would keep all of the appliances and wouldn't change anything about the layout other than adding the island (which there's plenty of space for). Any guesstimates?? |
Everything you mentioned are easy DIY projects. Cost should be equal to materials. |
New floors and new countertops are NOT easy DIY projects.
They are the kind of thing that someday, potential buyers will look at your kitchen and instantly be able to tell that the seller tried to save a few bucks by doing a half-assed DIY job. Have Lowes or Home Depot come and give you an estimate so you can get a baseline. I would be surprised if floor tiles and countertops cost less than $5,000 each. Painting cabinets... most likely you'd be better off getting new ones, especially if you are getting countertops anyway. |
Are you joking about cabinets? New cabinets run 20k plus. You should absolutely try to refinish and paint if possible. You give horrible advice. No tile should not cost 5k! Unless your kitchen is 400 square feet and maybe you're in the exurbs and it is. |
A small kitchen renovation generall costs about 50%-100% more than you think it will. |
Assuming budget-grade materials plus labor for a smallish 120sf kitchen:
Tile floor: $2500 - $3500 Granite counter: $3000 (50% more for quartz/Silestone) Kitchen island: $1500 - $2000 Painting Cabinets: $1500 for professional work Total: $8500-$10,000 |
We got all new cabinets from Lowe's last year for less than $8k (Diamond brand). Installation was another $4000. Granite counters were $3000. This was a 10'x10' kitchen with an island. If you pick your materials wisely you can remodel on a budget. |
Really bad idea to put a new stone countertop on old cabinets. |
Enh, previous owners put a granite counter on our 1970s cabinets and they've held up very well. I think cabinets from a long time ago are real wood and better quality than today's wood composite./ |
1. Better to pay more for new cabinets than less for repainted cabinets that look like shit. You can get new ones from Lowes or Home Depot for a lot less than $20k. Also, fuck off. 2. I said LESS THAN $5,000. |
