did your parents retire yet?

Anonymous
MY parents are 68 and 69, they have no plans on retiring anytime soon. They both have good jobs, and good 401ks and retirement plans. My mom worked in the Fairfax Government center as an administrative assistant since 1990. My dad has been working in SAIC since the 1995. Do your parents have any plans on retiring any time soon? if so how old are they? They are very good in health so maybe they would get bored at home if they retire

My parents are dead.

I'm 55 and plan to retire in about 10 years. DH is 60 and will retire in about 6 years.

Yes, they retired 20 years ago. My mom passed away last year and my Dad is probably not going to last the next year. Dad retired at 65.

I cansee that as we go along, later retirements wil be the norm. The 65 age for retirement was set at a time when the expected age of death was near 65. Now it is close to 80. There is no reason wh it shouldnt be raised to 72 or 75- at least for pension and social security payments.

Had business is it of yours whether your parents retire?

Yes. They retired when my dad was 58 and my mom was 56. They were small business owners and sold their business. My mom died when she was 74. Dad is now 82.

My FIL retired at 55. He died when he was 88. Mil is now 82.

DH retired when he was 56. I am a SAHM and 49.

We will never know retirement. The corporation he's worked for for almost twenty years doesn't do pensions or pay much, and I'm a freelancer. We scrape by with no savings or property. We'll work until we are dead or physically incapacitated. Robert Reich did a nice little documentary about the likes of us.

My parents are around 80 and retired, and his living parent will have to work until she drops.

My parents are both retired. My mother enjoys it. For my father it was a fiasco. FIASCO. He went into a deep depression and is lonely and isolated and feels purposeless. I wish to God he would get another job even if it was just a fucking paper route.

How can the younger generation get a chance at jobs if people never retire? If they have the money to retire and don't because they're scared of being bored, that's very selfish.

Nope. Neither is retired, and both are around 80. They are crazy about their work, though, and will likely never give it up.

Yes, my father was pushed out recently. Mid-60s. My mother rejoiced, because she'd been complaining about him being a workaholic for the past 30 years. Now he's going to be at her beck and call every day for the rest of his life. So glad I'm not him.

Yes. My parents are 69 and 67. They both retired a few years ago. My dad was a family physician and my mom did office work. My dad worked for a large HMO and while he was still in good enough health and of sound mind to continue practicing, he had slowed down a lot and just not able to keep up with the pace of the large medical office. So he retired about 3 years ago, but maintains his license and still does volunteer work (mostly in Mexico-they live in San Diego.)

Oh no! That is funny and sad. I hope he finds a new purpose. My dad did adjunct teaching for a spell, and we always involve him in home improvement projects (he lives nearby) and he loves that.
