Locking threads due to inactivity?

Anonymous
I thought I read somewhere that you you lock threads due to inactivity. If so, what is that time period? And does "inactivity" mean people not responding/posting or some other definition (like people not even opening it)?

Thanks.

Locking old threads was a manual process that I ran occasionally. It seems that the main cause of old threads being re-opened was that searches used to default to relevance instead of date. I changed that and opening of old threads has been less common. As a result, I haven't run the process to lock old threads for quite a while.

Just curious, as this thread came back yesterday, after nearly 4 years of inactivity.

PS, when I use the search function, it defaults to Relevance and not date. I use Chrome mostly.

I suspected that thread provoked your question. In my opinion, that thread is a good example of when an old thread should be reopened. Someone wanted an update and simply posting to that thread is better then retelling the entire story.

That is true of the main search page, but the search boxes that are inside each forum default to date.
