any advice on waiver of equine activity liability?

This will be my daughter's first summer at Congressional School of Virginia. She will attend the day camp which includes swimming, horse riding, etc. Now I am required to sign a waiver letter to make no claim againes the school for anything resulting from the intrinsic dangers of horse and pony activities, and assume all risks even if due to negligence on the part of the school or staff.

I do not feel comfortable to spare the school from negligence, but my daughter is looking forward to her first pony ride (she is 6). Can anyone share experience or give advice how I shall handle this? Many thanks

Have you called the camp director to discuss it?

As a long-time riding instructor and as a parent, I can tell you that you need to sign it or your child will not be allowed to take her rides. These waivers do not include acts of gross negligence on the part of the staff== which you are unlikely to see in my decages of experience in the riding world-- but relate to the inherent dangers of equestrian activities.

Virginia and Maryland have large horse industries and the laws of both states are very friendly to the equestrian businesses. Even without waivers, a parent is unlikely to win a lawsuit unless they show that the instructor/stable went out of their way to create a dangerous situation.

Riding is a fun, healthy, rewarding experience. Sign the form and let your kid have a nice time.

Many thanks! Very helpful indeed. I will sign and let my daughter enjoy the ride.
