We are about to start a reasonably big renovation on our house. We are going to move out but will not move out our furniture. Where can I go to buy huge plastic tarps...preferably something that we can seal if we want? I'm thinking those huge plastic bags that new mattresses. We can go the tarp and drop cloth route, but I'm just wondering if others who have BTDT have other ideas. Thanks for sharing. |
Sheets? Thrift shops will have them cheap. |
Home Depot sells rolls of plastic in the painting aisle. Very cheap for more plastic than you will ever need in your life. |
+1 |
Home Depot also has plastic drop cloths for paint that are cheap and a good size for covering furniture. |
Get an air scrubber with venting to the outside to create negative air. or the much cheaper version, get a box fan and run it in the window so that the air flows out. |
OP here. Thanks very much for all the idea. The roll of plastic wrap sounds super smart and economical. I can always throw old sheets over that for extra protection. And yes, ventilation is key! |
Yup, Home Depot.
We were going to put dropcloths over everything, until I saw the cost. Good big room-size dropcloths are like $40 each. With the rolled plastic sheeting, I got enough to do the whole house for a little over $100. It'll be disposable, sadly, but I didn't want to spend hundreds. |
We bought furniture bags of various sizes on Amazon. They are bright yellow and reasonably priced. SO glad we did as the furniture was fine and not dusty when the renovation was over. |
And turn off any blowing heat or cool air to prevent your ducts from needing cleaning. |
This, spend the extra money and get thicker. Sheets still let in dust. |
care to share the link? |

Many different sizes - they worked really well for us - we had a lot of furniture to cover. We also go the rolls of plastic from Home Deport for somethings but we found that bags were quick and easy to cover couches, mattress. |
Also bring with you or box up anything you don't want very fine dust getting into. Tarps and plastic are great but dust gets into dresser drawers! Bring the valuables with you. |
+1 for the plastic drop cloths they sell in the painting aisle of any store. They are ridiculously cheap ($1-$2 each) so you can buy a ton of them and cover everything you need with room to spare. Just buy the largest size and spread over the furniture. You can even pin the edges under the feet of the furniture so it stays put. |
