The movie the Martian?

What's the youngest you'd take a kid to see this? Common Sense Media says 12, but I've got a 10 year old boy dying to see it.

I read the book and have a 13 year old, and we are very jazzed to see it. I'm going to give you the most generic answer ever: depends on the kid. I think if you're comfortable with some language and some sexually charged situations (maybe...like a really iffy maybe... there's a tiny bit of this in the book that is so inoffensive it's hardly worth mentioning) and the basic terrifying premise of the book, it'd be fine. I'd probably take my son if he were younger.

Is it about this guy?

I am taking my 11 yo to see it tonight. We have read the book together (with my 14 yo) and all of us are excited about seeing the movie. (And the reviews are all fabulous!) As you know, the language is an issue.

See IMDB's parental advisory:

I am seriously considering taking my 7 and 9 year old girls. They are all about the space stuff. I read the book and didn't find anything offensive in it (except for some language, but nothing they haven't heard before).

OP here. Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll risk it. It's just the scariness of being stranded that worries me. These things didn't bother me as a kid (they oddly bother me more now). And they don't seem to bother him, either.

I think the intensity of it is more worrisome than anything else. If he isn't easily scared by movies then I would risk it.

Our kids are 9 and 11. DH is in the space industry. Kids are very space knowledgeable... DH has read the book. No, we are not taking our kids to this movie. They will have to wait for the tv version or Fios, where we can skip through certain parts. The language and the impalement as well as the general stress and intensity -- not for our kids.

I read the family filmgoer's review and it cemented the decision. I was hoping that it would be appropriate b/c DH is dying to see it and the kids are interested too... but for us, it's not the right level for kids.

This movie must really appeal to a lot of kids; it's the first non-kid oriented movie my 10 yo has requested to see in theaters. Still debating.

that website is off by at least two years, not much common sense on it. My 10 year old is going tonight.

16:51 here -- my 11 yo loved it! Before we saw the movie, I did tell my DS he could shut his eyes and hold my hand if anything was really scary to him. He never closed his eyes and he wants to buy the movie when it is out on Bluray. (My 14 yo DD loved it, too.)
