Tipping at Aveda

Anonymous
What's the rule when it comes to tipping at Aveda? I went in for the first time just to have my eyebrows waxed. In all other places I've been you can write in the tip when paying by credit card. This was not an option and I had no cash on me. I felt bad, but did read that at some Avedas they consider working in a salon a professional career and therefore don't believe in tipping.
Thanks!

Did you ask if you could apply it to the credit card? If you do that before they ring you up, they can just add the tip to the bill.

But as for Aveda specifically, I don't know the answer.

Many places now do not allow you to add tip to credit card. I think the salons then have to count it as revenue. It does not mean you should not tip. You just have to bring cash.

I've had my hair cut at Aveda salons in different cities and have never heard of no tipping.

If you go back, just bring cash and double tip.

I had that same experience at Aveda in another city. I find it frustrating. Frankly, whne salons do that I'm inclined to take my business elsewhere unless I was really impressed with the stylist, technician, etc.

If every other salon in the world (well, not quite) can find a way to allow you to tip by credit card, so can Aveda IMO.

I always bring cash to new places just in case this is the policy. To be honest though, it irritate me. It IS revenue. And furthermore, why inconvenience the customer?

I get my hair cut at an Aveda salon. They used to let you write it in, but changed it. Something about a tax law (they had a sign for awhile, but I don't remember what it said). I do find it annoying, because I have to plan to have the proper cash with me.

I've found that policy pretty common...but the first time it happened it caught me off guard and I had no cash on me. Embarrassing. I returned the next day with a generous tip.

I know for an eyebrow shaping it's just a few dollars, but you might consider going back to drop off a tip, and at that time suggest to the front desk that they let people know of the tipping policy at the time of booking or confirmation.

OP - Thanks all - since this practice is new to me, are you supposed to hand cash to the technician (seems weird to me) before you go to the counter to pay or do you give the tip in cash to the cashier and have them give it to the tech?

The cashier will often have a tip envelope or box for each stylist/ aesthetician, etc. Failing that, any respectful way you offer it will work fine! (I hate tipping because it always feels like throwing a few coins to the servant, even when it's a lot more than a few coins and the servant is a pretty comfortable art school grad.)
