We have one baby gate at the top our stairs and every time I step through it im scared I'm going to trip and fly down the stairs. It's by summer infant and has a bar going across the floor so I have to step over it and onto the first step. Are all gates designed like this? Carrying a baby and stepping through this does not seem safe. Any recommendations? Thanks! |
Whatever is cheapest at the Babys-R-Us-Center-Depot-Mart. |
No, you have a gate for an opening not stairs. That's very dangerous. Get the Kidco angle mount gate. I think the model is called safeway. Amazon has them. |
OP, we have the same thing. I didn't realize until after we'd bought it that they make gates that are called "top of stair" gates that don't have a bar to step over. So don't just search for "baby gate" but look for "top of stair baby gate". That should turn up lots of options. |
Thank you for the tip! It's difficult see in the photos if I had a bar on the bottom and many are not well described. I'll change my search mode! |
It is very dangerous to have a gate that is a tripping hazard at the top of the stairs.
The kidco angle mount gate is good if you have a place for it to rest when it is open. The babydan guardme is great if you don't have space for the gate to swing - you press the button and it collapses against the wall by itself. |
We have a Munchkin top of stairs gate that works fine. We love our Retract-a-Gate. We placed it at the bottom of our steps, but after using it for years, I'd be very comfortable with having it at the top as well. |
We have ours in the hallway 4 feet before the stairs. Obviously this won't work for everyone's home. |
No, they make ones for the stairs without the bar for precisely that reason. I think the issue is you need to get a hardware mounted gate (no bottom bar) whereas what you have is a regular tension mount. |
Btw, kidco makes the largest variety of special gates for all sorts of situations that can occur with stairs (eg, angle mount, banister mount, etc) |
the munchkin aluminium one is the one you want. a pain to install if you have funky banisters (DH had to build something to mount it to) but they are AWESOME once up. |
