Ripping out stairs

Anonymous
We live in a small, 100+ year old dc row house, and instead of the stairs going down the side of the house, they go back and forth on each other in the middle of the downstairs. Huge space waste. Have you ever ripped out your stairs and put new ones in? How much did it cost you?

We considered it for our basement and it was very expensive as its all custom work - at least $4000-8000 depending on finishes.

Make sure that if you do rip them out you have enough space to place the new ones to code. The new code is much wider stairs than the stairs you may have. One reason we are not changing ours since once we touch them we have to make them bigger and we can't.
