If so, how did you purchase/accumulate? I.e. where- galeries? Travel? |
We have art that we love. None are from galleries. A couple are pieces from artist relative / friend and then the rest are pretty inexpensive pieces we have picked up traveling and framed nicely. |
Friends...my husband is an artist...lots of trades with friends. We have payed for very little of what we have. |
No, not many... Just a couple of van gogh's in the attic, 2-3 rembrandts that I rotate here and there, and a few matisse's ![]() |
Tons-lots of tactile and colorful subjects by Alex Miller, hand made valentines and wooden frames decorated by the Twins, an original signed poster by Joe Coleman, a bunch of Marie Pobre stuff(my dad dated her in the late eighties), a Murray Desner, some reprinted Mark Rothko I got for XMas one year and a couple of Buddhas from Pier One. I am rich beyond belief. PS-forgot to mention an actual XRay of my broken toe courtesy of a local radiology unit. |
I love to go to the torpedo factory in Alexandria and workhouse in Lorton and buy something small from an artist who really intrigues me. Maybe someday I'll buy the $1,000 dollar items |

some odd stuff! I am sure your house is interesting ( I mean this in a good way) not my taste, but cool to see someone in DC with off beat taste (other than the Rothkos and Pier One Buddhas!) |
We have original pieces all over our house. Collected from artists, galleries, fundraisers, etc. for many years. We have found most of our pieces for the last 5 years at a gallery that features up and coming artists. Art is so personal, what I think is great you might think is crap. We buy pieces we find that are unique and appealing to us. |
The best way to get excellent art at good prices is to go to Art school shows. Graduating students usually have exhibitions around this time of the year. Go to the Corcoran school of art, Maryland Institute of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, UMD, American University, GW or Montgomery College Rockville Campus. You might spot a star in the making. There are several local artists that attended these schools recently and now have their works shown and owned by the Hirshhorn or The Corcoran (Maggie Michaels American University 2000, or Mary Coble GW 2001) |
My house is full of art. Most of it mine, paintings of Philippine scenery and abstracts. I have paintings from my grandfathers, aunts and uncles which are kind of Dali-esque. I have a wall for all my kids art.
I have matted prints I found on Ebay...Erte, Van Gogh, Serat. Someone gave me a box of cards with Columbian folk art on the covers so I framed a few of those. My daughter's b/w photography also sprinkles the wall. And then I have my favorite graphic pieces I've done commercially hanging around my computer. Oh and various masks, swords from all over the world, Chinese throwing stars, and a wooden surfboard. |
oh and maps. Lots of maps. I have a huge upside down Australian one. |
contemporary art from India starting with the Progressives. DC knows not to touch paintings. |
Every vacation we go on we try and find a local gallery or street fair (perfect in foreign countries) and purchase at least one piece for our home. They're normally on the small side since that's all we can afford so my goal is to save up for something really big! We tend to keep the framed family photo's upstairs so that our "vacation artwork" stays on the main level for visitors to enjoy. |
I have art given to me by family members and a few things I have gotten on my own. I also have some of my friends photography framed and hung on my walls.
I found a lithograph that I love by Rob Gonsalves...I got that one at the Discovery Galleries in Bethesda. |
