Xbox vs. Xbox One?

Can someone please explain the difference between the two and which is "better" and why? I am totally confused. DS is 10 and has been asking for one and just told us he wants to forgo a birthday party this year and get a "big" gift instead so we are thinking about this.

Xbox One is the newer model. About 2 years old at this point. You don't want to buy an Xbox (even if you can find one) as there really aren't any new games being made for it.
