Cost to put up a wall with one doorway opening (no doors, no closets)?

Anonymous
I am the OP of the thread about putting up a wall to make a foyer -- anyone know a ballpark of what it costs to put up a wall with one big door opening? No actual doors, no closets, just a wall with an opening, trimmed in moulding. I got a quote yesterday and it seemed way off base to me, so I'm curious what others have paid to add a wall. In Montgomery County. Thank you!!

Any wiring? You probably need at least one outlet per code.

Good question - I guess, one outlet sounds fine.

This is three days' work for a moderately skilled carpenter. I don't know the going rate anymore, but that gives you an idea. Materials shouldn't be much more than $100.

What were you quoted?

I was quoted $2,500-3,000.

That seems really high to me. This is a simple job, like I said. I'd get more quotes.

Thanks, PP. I thought so too. We've had walls removed before in just a few hours for like $300- I know this isn't the same, but jeez.

I would have guessed $1500 to $2500. Remember, you have to do framing, drywall, match with previous wall, molding (footboard, and crown), elecrtricla and then paint. It's not a massive job, but it's not 3 hours either.

Ripping out a wall is very quick compared to building and spackling. Materials also should be closer to a thousand depending on the size of the wall but the majority of expense is the time spent on finishing.

Nowhere near a thousand for materials. It will depend on the size of the wall, but this is a handful of studs, maybe a half dozen pieces of drywall and trim. Little more than a hundred bucks.

This. It's always easier to destroy than build. Also, will you need to move wiring? If you walk straight in your light switches are likely for the whole room, not just the new foyer. If you need to add a light for the foyer only, that is an additional cost. All these things add up.
