We thought our DD in first grade was doing ok with reading. We read in the summer and she is quite excited about reading. It's sad that we were told she is below grade reading level. Could she have had a bad day on the day she was tested?
What are the repercussions if any of being in the reading recovery program ? |
| Wth. Didn't school just start? How can she be behind? |
| My DD was in reading recovery although not in FCPS. It's a great program and was really effective in her case. I feel really lucky she was in this program, which gave her some great individual attention to really jump start her reading skills. |

Permanent disqualification from AAP, mandatory IEP and probably meds for ADHD.
Kidding, kidding. In my experience, teachers tend to score low and the start of the year so you will be sooooo wowed by all the progress your child makes by the end of the year. Also, if she knows how to read it will come back quickly and she'll be moved to the appropriate group. It could be that she's struggling with non-reading parts of the evaluation. I think they do some verbal questions to test comprehension. It could be a reflection of her comprehension, or shyness, discomfort with teacher, or even her memory. |
| Reading recovery? How can you be in reading recovery at the beginning of the year in first grade? |
| OP here: we are going to talk to the teacher tomorrow. Still quite surprised with the evaluation. We read today and she could read a level 1 book by herself and was able to "tell" the story. She has a great vocabulary. Not sure what happened in the test in the first week of school. |
| Was she reading in K? |
| FCPS or ACPS? |

Reading Recovery is not an effective program.
http://www.wrightslaw.com/info/read.rr.research.farrall.htm If you have a choice don't let the school put her in this program. Buy a phonics based program and read with her for 15 minutes every day. Some examples are Phonics Pathways book Hooked on Phonics Dancing Bears Reading Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy a Lessons All About Reading These programs are based on phonics not using picture clues, memorizing predictable stories, or using beginning sounds to guess the word. Good readers can rapidly and effortlessly decode. |
Reading recovery is an intensive, expensive program. It's so expensive that most schools don't offer that service because a teacher works one on one with only a few children over the course of a day. It tends to be offered in Title I schools where they have more money for remedial work. Students are carefully chosen for the program. So no, it's not something that a student gets because the teacher is intentionally low balling scores to make herself look better.

There's more to reading than decoding. However, the school will be thrilled if a parent does all of the remediation at home so that they can focus on another struggling reader. |
DS and his 1st grade peer group (at least the ones I know well) read Level 2 at a minimum. Level 1 books are extremely basic. |
| I assume it is from a DRA score. |
