A little scary - how do I get rid of an old propane tank?

Anonymous
Found an old, rusted propane tank under the deck. Thanks, former homeowners!

God knows how long it's been there and if it's full.

How do I get rid of it? Call the fire station?

I'm a little freaked out by how long it's been there!

I should add: I'm in Arlington

Grill size or house size? There are companies that do the house size ones. Propane taxi might take the small one.

I have a rusted tank to get rid of too. Someone told me that I can just take it the county dump and they have a special place for you to put them there. But this is in Montgomery county and my tank is empty or nearly empty.

Grill size. Which is why I'm having trouble finding information, I'm sure.

There is the hazardous waste dropoff in Arlington (which I think is free). I wonder if it's safe enough for me to move?

If it's a grill size, just take it up to the propane refill centers (Home Depot always has one outside) and place it in the cage to be recycled.

You might call you local fire department, non emergency line of course and just ask them the proper disposal method. I'm sure they know and can give you good advice. Otherwise you could also check out the Waste Management website for Arlington County. They may have information on there as well.

How to recycle/dispose of helium and propane tanks

We accept helium and propane tanks at the Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station at no charge.

At the Transfer Station, proceed to the Recycling Area. Hand your tank directly to an attendant on the upper lot near the electronics recycling drop-off.

Tanks/cylinders must be 20 pounds or less in size.

We accept
•empty tanks
•tanks with remaining helium or propane.

Whenever possible, return propane, helium, SCUBA and other tanks to the vendor or supplier from which you obtained them for reuse. If you can't return the tank, try to use up the contents so the tank is no longer under pressure.

What is not accepted?

We do not accept these types of cylinders or tanks
•home or commercial oxygen
•commercial acetylene
•tanks larger than 20 pounds

To avoid explosion risks, propane tanks (and other pressurized metal containers) are not accepted in Montgomery County's curbside blue bin collections, or in its curbside scrap metal recycling collections.

OP, is this your first home? A grill propane tank is not scary, even if it's old. Buck up.

Blunt. But true. How is a propane tank scary? It’s not going to spontaneously blow up.

Can you turn it release the gas? If not, just take it to the dropoff place. Yes, it is safe to transport.

Go outside, turn the knob on the tank all the way to the left, and that will ensure any remaining gas is emptied out.
