Allow DD to keep pursuing something she's bad at?

As always “it depends”.

Middle school ages are the big growth spurt years. Kids who were great at soccer because they were fast, grow and slow down, and now are not great. Okay. There are lots of other sports.

I tell people all the time that my own daughter played very high level youth soccer, over the years, played with girls who later played/competed in a number of college sports for very large colleges. Soccer was something they did along the way because it is a team sport that lots of kids start out in. You can and should switch.

And, while fitness is important, there are lots of new activities starting at middle school ages to consider. Art, music, acting all get going at those ages. Take an acting class. Join a youth choir. Take up kayaking. Stay fit and find things that interest you. Expect that not everything will fit the bill, but give things a fair shot.

I have one kid who took up weightlifting in college, and another’s hobby is cliff jumping. (The only one in the family not afraid of heights.).

Let's not lose sight of the fact that our kids are going to grow up to be adults, and the vast majority of adults don't get elected President, or become pro-athletes, rockstars, or astronauts. Sadly, most of us haven't even continued our high school hobbies. Seems like the two questions we ought to be asking are: (1) does the child enjoy the activity now? and (2) could the child continue this activity as a hobby as an adult? Most sports can be played as rec sports, there are lots of amateur music groups, etc. You don't have to be brilliant to quality for those things.

Not saying that we shouldn't invest in the rare individual who could be an Olympian or a concert violinist, but the parents of those kids know when they've got one.
