Student teacher ratio

I was suprised to learned that the 1st grade teacher my son has this year in FCPS doesnt have an assistant with 27 kids in class. How do they do it? Is this normal? Hard to say for now how this affects the kids but I know couple of times he came back home without things he was supposed to, like the other day they had a library day and he came back with no book because it seems he wasted too much time looking for a book etc. my son already gets distracted easily so with even less staff than in K I wonder how much he will actually learn and ... Not sure what I can do about it?

25-27 students is pretty common. Talk to your teacher at back to school night to help provide cues and establish a feedback loop on your 1st grader.

Totally normal for FCPS unfortunately. 1st grade in FCPS can go up to 27 without an assistant. After 27, there is an aide that is split between classes up to 30 children. After 30 children up until I think February a new class can be formed.

My dd's 1st grade class was 31 students! And no, dd learned hardly anything. The teacher sent home pages and pages of school work that dd didn't complete during the day expecting that somehow I could get that done plus her nightly homework during the 1 hour a night that I had to get homework done.
