Wife and I have about a week worth of travel to Europe in early December.
Any suggestions? Its her first time - other than a half day layover in London last year. I have been to Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Stockholm, Milan and Rome and loved all of them. Want a bit of romance, and good food before we have a hectic beginning of the year! |
| Germany at Christmastime is wonderful. So is Copenhagen. |
| Vienna, but it's going to be crowded. |
| I second Vienna, I was there that the first week of December 2 years ago. I also really love Zurich that time of year. The Christmas markets are so fun in that part of Europe. |
| Vienna is a great great choice. |
| Lyon has the Fete des Lumieres at that time and it is amazing. Lyonnaise food is also wonderful and very cold-weather suitable. It would be a very nice time and you could also do a side trip to Annecy. Nice is not all that far too if you have the whole week and it will likely be sunny. |
| Salzburg. Lovely. |
| Search for Christmas fairs in Germany online. Cologne has a wonderful one. Antwerp is also fun at Christmas time. Or Oberammergau, that region. |
| The Xmas markets are great, but Good food and Germany are not synonymous. You can eat well, but you need to plan in advance. If you just eat anywhere, you will eat very badly. Austria is a better bet. |
| Not sure why you think it will be miserable, but if it's because of the weather, I was in Greece right after Christmas and the weather was very nice. We didn't need anything more than a light jacket most days, even less others. Some of the higher elevation areas were cooler, but it was really very pleasant. I thought the food there was great, but I'm not sure if it's a place you want to travel now or not! |

Try Prague and/or Budapest. Both are CHEAP. Prague has become more "discovered" in recent years as an cool alternative to other $$$ European capitals. The downtown is super crowded in late spring and summer but quite lovely in fall and winter with all the stunning architecture.
Budapest is a gorgeous city too. You won't run into tons of other Americans and it has a unique old world feel too it. Both have tons of affordable food, drink and hotel options. |
| Head to Portugal. Weather won't be bad, it's beautiful, the food is amazing and it's economical. |
Second this. CHEAP. Delicious food and wine. Wonderful people. |

All good choices. Germany and Vienna (and Prague) all have Christmas markets and lots of holiday atmosphere.
But Lisbon is amazing!! One of my favorite places. |

Vienna - we lived there for two years and it is magical at Christmas. Be warned though, it is all over Christmas Eve. All the markets are packed up and gone.
