Neuro psych testing

What is the earliest age that a child can undergo neuro psych testing? 6 or later?

Our DS had his first at 6, and I wish that I'd waited.

His ADHD was/is off the charts and he simply couldn't get through all of the testing so we had a lot of "inconclusive" data. We chose to re-do the testing this year - another $3K.

7 is the earliest recommended age.

The longer you wait, the more information you'll get. We did our first one at 7.5 and it picked up academic concerns that it wouldn't have been able to detect a year earlier, when academic expectations are lower. I'd recommend doing it when you need the information (i.e. you are making school changes, he's not getting support you think he needs), not when your child is an arbitrary age.

No matter when you do it you'll want to do it again a few years later because the child will change.

We just did it at Children's at age 4. Insurance covered it and we find it helpful.

Np - but what department at children's does it? We'd like to get one sooner than later, as we think it would be helpful now, but recognize that we'll need to repeat in a few years around 7, so having insurance coverage would be lovely for this round. But I can never sort out who/where does this (I think maybe KKI has been mentioned too, but again don't even know what department to call).

I sent in paperwork to Childrens in May and still haven't heard anything. This is the department link though:

We sent our paperwork in around April and got a call for a cancellation appt in late June. Otherwise it would have been October they said.

Similar experience with KKI. Called in February, 6 month wait. Got a call the next day that they had a cancellation for the following Monday.

My son is undergoing one now at 10 so that we can prepare better for his middle school transition. After seeing how exhausted he was during the first day of testing, I can't imagine doing it earlier. However, perhaps it doesn't last as long when they're younger?

His neuropsych is 8 hours total, broken down into two days.

Does children's hospital take insurance or is it out of pocket?

Insurance but it has to be for a medical concern, not a learning issue.
