Has anyone installed a skylight and can share how much it cost? I'm thinking of adding one to our attic bath - no windows in there currently. We're in MoCo. Thanks! |
$1800-2500 |
Do a solar tube - should be able to get it done & installed for under $1500, especially if it is for a room in the attic. |
Got several quotes and they were all around $3600-4400/skylight. That was for a 22x51 velux skylight and included the internal boxing and framing. The higher end pricing was for extra reinforcing since we needed to cut joists in the attic. Smaller bathroom skylight probably won't run you as much.
Solar tube quotes were around $750. They look very different though (they look like a big round light that is always on) and don't give you that "hole to the sky" feel if that is what you are looking for. |
Don't have a price estimate, but we have solar tubes in two of our bathrooms and they help so much with bringing in light. During the day, we don't need to turn on the bathroom lights at all since the solar tubes provide more than enough light. |
We just paid $2400 to put a 48x48 inch skylight in, including drywall. We did not have the budget to reframe the roof (I presume that would have more than doubled the cost) so we left the ceiling joists where they were and built the skylight around them and painted them white. It gives a cool industrial feel in our old house.
We considered solar tubes -which I theoretically really like. But as others have noted, they are essentially like bright lights in your ceiling, but are not the equivalent of windows - in that they don't give you an outside feel. I think they are great options for bathrooms without windows, where you are just looking to add natural light. But they were what we wanted in our upstairs windowless den - that really needed the feeling of outside. |
