Infertility Support and Discussion

My doctor told me to start Menopur tonight, and I wanted some input on whether this is a good idea.
Here's the brief history. After being on the pill for 10 years, I went off a year ago and my period never returned. Shady grove recommended that I try IUI first. Today I went in for some blood work & an ultrasound (a no-menses work-up) in hopes of starting an IUI cycle. I was told I have 21 follicles, and should start Menopur tonight. It seemed like a LOT of follicles to me, and I'm afraid that I'm going to get way too many mature follicles from the Menopur, making IUI a risky proposition. Has anyone else been in this situation? |
| Sounds like you are talking about your antral follicle count. This is different than mature follicles. 21 is a good antral number. |
| DId they try clomid with timed intercourse first? WHy are they starting with IUI? |
| Agree with PP - your AFC is good, but doesn't indicate how many mature follicles you'll create. The SG docs will look at all your numbers and pick a dose of meds that should not cause too many mature follicles to form. When you go in for your day 11 ultrasound, they'll see what is going on and if you have too many follicles then they will let you decide whether you want to convert to an IVF or cancel the cycle to avoid multiples. But they start everyone off with conservative doses during a first IUI cycle to try to avoid that situation, and they usually do avoid it. |
